New season brings 1st waves for inclusive surf club

14 Apr 2026

Watergate Bay saw some of its warmest Easter weather in years, providing the perfect backdrop to officially launch Aloha Kākou Shaka Surf Club’s 2026 season.

Believed to be the world’s first surf club built by and for individuals who are neurodivergent or have learning disabilities, the club continues to break new ground in inclusive sport.

Last summer alone, the initiative supported 80 young people to experience the joy and freedom of surfing — and ambitions are even higher for 2026.

The season began by welcoming eight young participants into the ocean for the very first time. For many who are often excluded from the surf, the experience was a significant personal milestone.

Thanks to the generous backing of The Claire Milne Trust, Bridges 4 Change, Wavehunters, The Bolingey Barbarians, Rotary Club of St Austell Bay, The Co-op, Go Jute, Surfing England, and Alderton Associates, ten sessions have already been secured for the upcoming season.

The club is now seeking additional sponsors to expand its impact further, with a goal of delivering four sessions a week throughout June, July, and August, running on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

For families and carers, the club offers low-cost surf sessions, ensuring financial barriers don’t stand in the way of life-changing experiences in the water.

Aloha Kākou is a Hawaiian phrase meaning “love and compassion for all”. The club’s name and logo were designed by its award-winning founder, Aiden Coxhead, to reflect and communicate the spirit of the club.
